Our base for the weekend will be the pretty market town of Kendal, easy to reach and perfectly positioned at the nexus of the Lakes, Dales and Forest of Bowland. We’ve negotiated a fantastic group rate at the four-star Castle Green Hotel, but you’re very welcome to make your own arrangements.
Directions to Kendal
The easiest way is to exit the M6 at Junction 37 and follow the A684 towards Kendal. The Castle Green is on your right just before you enter the town. Five hours from London, less than two hours from Leeds or Manchester. Honestly, with Google Maps, it shouldn’t be that hard.
The super-fast (sometimes) Virgin Trains West Coast line connecting London and Glasgow stops at Oxenholme. We’d recommend you then take the four minute train ride into Kendal. Remember to book your bike on the train as there’s only four places for bikes available.
Castle Green HQ
We hope you’ll choose to stay with us at the Castle Green Hotel, set in 14 acres of beautiful wooded gardens. There’s everything you need for a brilliant weekend’s cycling, right on your doorstep.
We’ll meet here for the grand depart on Friday and Saturday, returning for post-ride refreshments outside Alexander’s, the pub set in the grounds. The Greenhouse restaurant, serving fine local produce, is the venue for our group dinner on Saturday evening.
We’ve negotiated a preferential group rate of just £100 per person, per night including a three course dinner, bed and breakfast (based on two sharing). If you want to stay the Thursday night too, bed and breakfast will be £57.50.
Four star luxury only £100/person/night
Dinner, bed and breakfast. Based on two sharing.
Spacious and comfy twin rooms
All rooms are en-suite with big flat-sceen TVs and free wifi. There are doubles too if you’re travelling with a partner, or would rather not share.
Swimming pool, steam room and gym
Guests (that’s us) get use of the heated pool, steam room and fully-equipped gym. You can even book a sports massage in the spa for after the rides.
Free parking and bike storage
There’s loads of parking spots in the grounds and bikes can be securely stored overnight so you don’t have to wheel them up to your room.
As much as we can wholeheartedly recommend it, we appreciate the Castle Green may not be to everyone’s taste, or budget. Fortunately, there are plenty of great places in and around Kendal, with B&Bs from as little as £50 per person, per night. Please do still join us for dinner on the Saturday though.
Built in the 1200s, you can see it from the Castle Green Hotel, but it’s worth wandering over to see the ruins close-up and enjoy the views in all directions.
Brucie’s Bike Shop
Est. 1979, Brucie’s is open on Friday and Saturday for any last minute spares or fixes. They also have a nice selection of vintage Brevatto bikes and frames.
Hawkshead Brewery Tour
Situated in nearby Staveley, you can go sample the local fare, or if enough people are interested, we can arrange a 45 minute tour for £10, including a pint to finish.
